Gosfield

Numbers nearly 2,600 inhabitants. The whole colored population, by actual count, is 78.

Of the heads of families, all but two or three are freeholders, and some of them have very good farms. James King, Esq., Clerk of the Courts for the County of Essex, C. W., thus characterized the colored people of Gosfield: “They are good, loyal subjects, and good, honest people. They are as moral as any people. There is no fault to be found with them at all.”
