Create a New Open Textbook

Creating an Open Textbook

As an instructor, you may have reviewed all the existing OER and open textbooks and not been able to find one that meets your needs. If you are committed to using open textbooks in your teaching, the next step may be to create your own open textbook.

Before you get started, you may be interested in reading this essay by Tony Bates, Writing an online, open textbook: Is it worth it?

Getting Started

Once you’ve decided to create your own textbook, you may want to develop a workflow for how you’ll approach the project.

Conceptualize → Outline → Write → Edit → Review → Publish

With that particular workflow in mind, we have organized the sections of this authoring guide that will be of assistance to you:

Conceptualize and Outline
Write
Edit
Review
Publish
